Not so long ago, well, maybe 15 year, but that's still not so long, a 1 GB hard drive was a real luxury. Heck, I can remember trying to decide if I should spend the extra money to upgrade to a 512 MB hard drive not so long ago. Now computers come with 4 GB or RAM alone, and storage is off the charts.
